Don't feel bad that your Irish is Scottish. I had been living near Belfast & on arriving home, I knew better than to open my mouth in the Irish pub where my folkie friends & I regularly played music. I feigned laryngitus well - until someone who had seen me begged me to tell the taxicab joke. And I'd had a pint. I am female. Weighed 102 at 5'6. And hard of hearing. So I go ahead and I tell the joke, starting as a whisper ...that got louder ...and louder ...and louder as it went, until I got to, "...Never you worry, I got ' im with the door as we passed!"
The bartender comes over, puts his massive hands on my shoulders, either side of of my throat, leans over my head, and asks, "And just *what* *part* of Ireland were ye stayin in?"
