To quote George Carlin. "If the cop didn't see it, I didn't do it."

I think a duty to report is a violation of my right to not incriminate myself.

Do not get LEOs involved unless there is no other choice.

4 Decades in LE and I will tell everyone...if no one was injured and no 3rd party damage....why the heck would you call the police?

Pull up to a cop, "sorry, I ran a red light two miles back, write me a ticket". "Oh and was was doing 10 over the limit too"

I ad a AD in my kitchen from a malfunctioning gun. It went off out of battery, the case split and blew the primer off. The bullet bounced off a nylon gun case, went through my wife's ceramic deer, bounced back off the miniblinds and landed behind me. I did not contact PD, dealing with my wife was enough.

Even if I lived in a state that requires me to call the police if I have a accidental discharge, I wouldn't call. I would just get rid of the evidence and if the police showed up to my door, I would say 'Yeah I heard that sound too, I think it came from across the street.' I'm not calling the cops if I accidently got 1 mile per hour over the speed limit too. I'm a rebel.

If that dude saw a round fly into a safe direction, he should thank whatever deity he believes in and be more careful next time. End of story.

As a retired police officer let me say emphatically avoid getting the police involved in anything except when there is clear negligence with actual damage or is required by law.

Sometimes, I have an accidental discharge on purpose, just to practice not calling the cops, because when you're under stress, you revert to training.

If no one is hurt and no one else's property is damaged, you aren't "getting away" with anything. Your sense of guilt is misguided and inappropriate. What are you expecting the cops to do if you call them? Send you to bed without supper? YOU feel bad, so YOU want an authority figure to tell you everything is ok. If you call them and they're fair about it, you've just wasted their time. There's nothing to do. If you want to feel better about something that scared you, call a friend, call a therapist, but don't call the frickin' cops.

My takeaway is "law enforcement is NOT your friend "! Sad, but unfortunately too often true.

Don’t call the cops just apologize for having your TV too loud.😂😂😂

Call the cops? I don't even tell my wife when I've had a negligent discharge

Long ago I had a 45ACP plastic bullet powered only by a primer that hit the work bench. That scared the Hell out of me and I have played it extra safe ever since.

I had an elderly friend who had been a Texas DPS Trooper in the 70's. He was disabled and lived in public housing in a small East Texas town. Once we were discussing the merits of a revolver vs a semi-automatic. He was giving me a safety lesson in his four-plex rent home when he had an AD with his 9mm. He had the gun pointing down and away from us so the round hit the baseboard on the wall shared with a neighbor. He immediately knocked on their door but there was nobody home. He told me later that he told the housing authority and that the round didn't penetrate the wall. Amazingly he wasn't punished in any way.

BTW he was targeted one night after parking his car in front of his home. An SUV occupied by several "young scholars" pulled up and one got out armed with a baseball bat. My friend used a walker so he probably looked like an easy target - until he pulled out his 9mil! His would-be attacker jumped back in the SUV and took off! I wish I could've seen that.

I wrote a reply but thought “Would the Armed Attorneys tell me to not post this online?”. Thanks for your ongoing advice!

a duty to report is unconstitutional if you are reporting on yourself
