INTRO - 00:00
HISTORY - 01:37
COMMUNISM - 05:43
REVOLUTION - 08:39
CHANGE - 10:23

#onepiece is a Communist #Anime... One Piece is a a Monarchist #Manga... #Oda is the head chef in the political kitchen..

WRONG. One Piece is revolutionary politics at it's finest. #Luffy is actually a revolutionary propaganda icon.

It's very clear to me that the message of One Piece is revolt if your government is not effective and empathetic to its people.

It's always so weird to me when people insist that One Piece is not political. I mean how can you think that, when you have read/watched this story

One of the most consistent political themes I've seen in the series is : "Don't be a Dick that gives everyone a terrible back story." Celestial Dragons are getting overthrown before this ends.

I love how the Straw Hats strand for freedom. Luffy doesn’t go to places and try to change them if he disagrees with how their run, he doesn’t care unless the people are actively suffering like in Wano, and even then he was asked to help get his friend back in power to give the people their freedom back. They don’t push their views on kings/rulers. Luffy isn’t even a stern captain, if his crew wants to do something, even if it means more work and danger for him he lets them follow their heart.
I heard someone use the expression “Luffy wouldn’t want this for me” once and it’s stuck with me ever since. It’s made me live my life in a way that’s more aligned with the Straw Hats

okiku is not genderfluid she is a trans woman
she claims she's a "woman at heart" (a more literal translation is "my being is a woman"), which is how a lot of trans people in japan describe themselves

One real-world parallel that REALLY struck me was the saving of the Ohara. People have saved libraries like this before, my favorite video essayist (Jacob Geller) has talked about how they did that in Timbuktu(?), lining the insides of barrels with pages and floating them down rivers

It boggles my mind how many people seemed shocked about Oda having a picture of Che hanging in his wall. Like, did these people not understand anything about the 1000+ chapter manga they've read...?

Oda won't say which way of goverment is the best, One Piece kinda says that every form of goverment can be good, but of it is bad then it is on the people's hands to take it down. If Riku's grandson is a tyrant, then another revolution should come to take him down, that is the message, the people give power to the ruler not the other way around.

i've always wanted a one piece video that looks into the comparisons between the series and our current reality. It's getting scary how Oda does it. The GOAT for a reason.

Hell yes, it’s so badass!!

As you say, Oda doesn’t always stick the landing, but he’s certainly one of the best when it comes bringing real world oppression into his story in a relatable way.

Your example of replacing a king with a king is a good one. Another is Skypiea, which is about indigenous population fighting a guerrilla war against a colonizing invader. That’s awesome! But he ends the tale with oppressor and the people they’ve harmed just learning to get along. Fishman Island has wonderful intentions, but boy do I have so many issues with how Oda conceptualizing racism.

It’s understandable. Oda wants the end to be about coming together in “one piece, ” and it’s partially a story for children. It makes sense to me that he wouldn’t be able to realistically depict the complexity of these issues. But I feel he learns, grows, and tries. I appreciate that. On the trans issue, he has come a long way from making Sanji run from grotesque trans caricatures to Kiku.

One day, I want to write a huge thesis on queer liberation and prison abolition in the Impel Down arc…

Another great video!

I still have quite a bit of OP to get through before I can be considered “caught up” but this is an aspect of the story I already find super interesting, & I’ll definitely be saving this video to come back to it later! Thank you for taking the time to make it!

I still think it's good to point out that it does show you consequences for character's actions. Even Luffy's. So I don't think it's goal is to tell you how to live even if Oda himself has more left leaning politics, it just merely points out different perspectives that you might not have seen, as well as try to get you to look at history and politics in different ways.
