Add a coolant filtration system to your truck for less than $100!

Hey guys and gals. After the dealership replaced the water pump on our 2018 Silverado due to a premature failure (only 68k miles?? Come on GM...), the service advisor recommended a coolant flush - to the tune of nearly $300. After picking my jaw up off the floor I politely declined, and told her I'd take care of it myself.

Now, when the water pump failed, it rapidly jettisoned about 90% of the coolant in the system onto the ground. The dealership refilled the coolant when they replaced the pump, so I wasn't too concerned about debris in the system. That being said, rather than flushing a bunch of brand new coolant out of the truck, I decided to add a simple filtration system that uses a replaceable spin-on filter that you can buy at any auto parts store in the country. The install is very simple, the results are low profile and relatively hidden, and it gives me peace of mind knowing that any junk left over from the old water pump will get filtered out - all for less than $100.

Let me know what you think in the comments! As always, if you have any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to get back to you.

Thanks for watching!

Awesome, I wrote all the part #s down and going to install this on my 1990 jeep Cherokee that has a major rust issue running through the antifreeze

Your engine is gasoline powered yes? If yes, does your water pump have enough PSI, for your new filter to work properly?
Thank you video.

Thanks for another interesting DYI project. This setup can be used on multiple vehicles not just the Silverado.
I never thought about a coolant filtration system on my rigs. Yes on the shutoff valves!
One little piece of advice is to always buy and use "pet safe" antifreeze. It only takes one lick of a small puddle of coolant to quickly kill your pet or your child. Trust me it is a terrible thing to see and not much you can do about it because it destroys the internal organs so quick there is almost no time for your Vet to save them. Use Amsoil propylene glycol or other brands, like Sierra, that are child and pet safe. Zerrex doesn't advertise a pet safe formula antifreeze.
