The "proper" way to solve x^2 - 9 is not x^2 = 9, but by using the difference of two squares, i.e. x^2 - 9 = x^2 - 3^2 = (x + 3)(x - 3), therefore, if (x + 3)(x - 3) = 0 then either x + 3 = 0, or x - 3 = 0, and therefore, x = 3, or x = -3.
