nice job on the vent. one thing we did on are outhouse vent was we put a screen on the top of it, (the part that goes outside, like a screen from a old window) we had a problem with bees building nests in ares and it plugged the opening up. seems to help.

Hi Karl I have heard you can paint the exposed pipe black which helps with draft. Also a screen on top of pipe might be a good idea.
I use 3”” pipe with a 12vdc bilge vent fan, connected to one 100watt solar panel.

Have had an outhouse for 20 plus years never heard of ice building up, I also just vented it last year but really for airflow. We do have a 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out below the seat, not sure if that’s why we’ve never had and ice. And have used it in 10 below 🥶ya don’t spend too much time out there . Goin up next week, this week we were camping by Pardeeville . Who doesn’t want to be in Pardeeville 🤪

Karl, I'm guessing that extra strap may actually be a wading belt. For safety, you wear that so in the event you get submerged, it prevents water from filling up the waders.

Your vent will probably be helpful but I don’t think it’s going to stop the icing on the bottom of your toilet seat because this is a temperature in humidity problem that has nothing to do with the tree roots the ground itself always has moisture in it unless it’s a desert. Under your toilet seat, The ground is releasing humidity that rises up to the toilet seat and freezes on it because it’s an insulated and is allowing the moisture to escape. Your idea of leaving the seat up and putting a piece of plywood over the hole I actually was an excellent idea. Another idea that would work would be to simply cut add 2“ thick piece of Styrofoam and glue an extra piece on around the edges so it will sit over the toilet seat and insulate it.
I remember watching the Alaska frontier TV show 10 years ago and the people up there bought a 3 inch thick piece of Styrofoam and cut it into 2 foot square and cut the circle out of the center of it to make a foam toilet seat and they would just carry that from the house with them and set it over the hole and sit on it to use the bathroom.
