The Biggest Argument Against Safer Consumption Sites #harmreduction #addictionrecovery #shorts

In the ongoing debate about safe consumption spaces, critics argue that such facilities might inadvertently encourage continued drug use. However, it's important to recognize the current reality: people will continue using substances regardless. Instead of denying this fact, proponents of safe consumption spaces believe that providing a designated environment for substance use could offer essential support without the burden of shame. Many individuals who use substances already face daily struggles with shame and stigma, especially those who inject. By creating an environment free from judgment, we could positively impact users' well-being. The negative consequences of shaming individuals about their substance use can lead to them quitting out of self-disgust rather than genuine desire

It isn't about shame and stigma. It is about linking those users with medical professionals that will keep them from dying and at the same time, connecting them to resources to help them get clean. The research has overwhelmingly shown safe consumption sites, save lives, are cheaper than "enforcement", and gets more people clean and stay clean.

Yea as a drug addict myself I don’t see this making much sense. It’s quite literally just giving people the green light to continue using hard drugs, with a wink and a nod. Yes I know some people will use elsewhere regardless. And probably a few also wouldve stopped had they not been facilitated in certain ways like this. It’s a tricky one but I see a lot of harm reduction quite clearly just making a life of drug addiction easier, and normalized, by these harm reduction teams, usually made up of ppl who don’t understand how far gone a lot of these addicts truly are. Help them get back in touch with themselves and the reality of their lives, not a push in the direction of continued use.

As a recovering addict it makes no sense to give addicts what they need to use and not call it enabling lol youre basically paying them to get loaded 😂

Or we work on mental health issues instead of endorsing "safe drug use".

Harm reduction is the way to go at the moment because people are still gonna do it! So you need to teach safe ways to do so and be able to watch the person after as well

Thats so stupid. Why not try and encourage people in the right direction to stop using drugs rather than encourage "safe drug use?" People are so stupid

People who talk down on harm reduction and MAT programs are part of the problem, people are dying from fentanyl overdoses daily and harm reduction is needed until we get full grasp on a solution to this crisis, if someone uses drugs for 5 years and uses dirty needles and gets AIDS, hep c etc. Decides to get clean years down the line now they have health problems they have to deal with because they didn’t have access to clean needles, that doesn’t seem fair to me and access to clean needles isn’t going to prevent someone from going to rehab
