Photos show new designs for Chinese military aircraft, experts say
The newspaper said
Blurred images of two military aircraft appeared online on Friday Two new Chinese stealth aircraft have been developed, and defence experts say they are clearly advanced designs, but there are not enough details to draw definitive conclusions.
Both designs lack a tail, meaning they do not have vertical stabilizers to help maintain control.
Such aircraft are usually stabilized by computers that interpret control inputs sent by the pilot.
The larger of the two designs is roughly diamond-shaped, with three air intakes for its engines — two along the fuselage and one at the top — a highly unusual configuration.
The smaller has a more conventional design, but no tail.
Both lack the 90-degree angles typical of a stealth formation, which is designed to reduce radar detection.
As China modernises its military, these designs “show the Chinese aviation industry is willing to experiment and innovate,” said Euan Graham, a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
“Whatever the merits and demerits, this design appears to be very original.
They deserve credit for that, and they should shake off any complacency that the United States and its allies are always setting the pace,” he said.
China’s Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Pentagon said it was “aware of the reports” but added that it had no further comment beyond what was stated in its annual report on the Chinese military this month.
Sixth-generation fighter jets
The United States is in an advanced stage of its Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, which aims to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet, but it is unclear what form that effort will take under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Europe and Asia are cooperating on a separate next-generation aircraft under the Global Combat Air Program, and a joint British-Japanese company recently announced that it would .
The larger of the two new Chinese aircraft flies over the city of Chengdu by matching nearby buildings, signs, logos and trees with satellite and file images.
The date could not be independently verified.
The Chinese aircraft shown in the photos posted online are not the first modern aircraft to lack a tail.
, Opens new tabB-2 and B-21 stealth bombers both have flying wings, and many unmanned aircraft, such as the Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) , Opens new tabRQ-170 and the Chinese CH-7, do not have tails.
Neither Chinese aircraft has been given an official designation.
While the designs are relatively new compared to the rest of the Chinese fleet, it is not possible to determine how stealthy they are, how maneuverable or fast they are, or what kind of electronics they carry — details needed to determine whether they are truly “next-generation” designs, five defense experts said.
Peter Leighton, a defense and aerospace expert at the Griffith Asia Institute in Australia, noted that it is generally difficult to apply designations such as fifth-generation — which includes current stealth aircraft such as the F-22 and F-35 — to Chinese aircraft, which often include unique design features that never appear again.
China’s J-20 and J-35 also have stealth capabilities, but their capabilities are not publicly known, and only the J-20 is in service.
The United States has been pouring resources into advanced missiles and other systems to deter China in the Indo-Pacific region.
It recently tested a missile interceptor system over the strategically important island of Guam using an advanced radar.
Kelly Greco, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center in the United States, said China’s daytime flights of the new designs over cities where they can be easily seen were “bizarre.”
She said it may be easier for China to match
Chinese military this month.
