From Failing Grades to Software Engineer

still a failure tho...

This is the story of how I went from getting an 38% in calculus to working at Square and Shopify. I made this video to try to help people, but mostly I made it for myself. I made this video so that in 3 years I can look at it and see what stage of life I was in. I know this is different than my usual material, it's just important for me to make :)

Hey all, I understand that the advice I gave in this video is not a one step "method" or "system" to get into FANG.
If anyone tries to sell you on a method to get into FANG they are lying to you.
There are no guarantees in life. Everything you achieve you achieve on your own.

Good luck

Bro this is inspirational. I'm trying to do the exact same thing: making small changes and tweaks to achieve my goals while having fun. It's not easy, but I'm happy to see that there are still people out there not giving up on their goals (even when it gets hard). I'll forever support this channel. Keep it up!

I really like your videos they are so real and relatable. This video got me thinking about my own mindset when it comes to my own projects and goals! I need to start making some changes in my life and I agree with you that grades matter, at least to show your own commitment to school. Keep it up!!!

The ending was like from a movie, you needed to find that studying is something fun. That’s what makes you successful.

EE '12 grad here. For the longest time, I hated myself for not being able to secure a job in FAANG like half of my graduating class. I equated success and happiness as being a part of the herd. I tried HARD for many years after graduating to get into grad school or getting a HW job. No luck. 8 years later, and now I'm working at a multi-billion $$$ pharma company helping them manufacture products that are saving people's lives. Much more satisfying directly making an impact than being another cog in the wheel. Ngl though, still think how life would've been if I had gotten that job at Microsoft.

32 in Algebra, 43 in Calculus; first year wasn't fun. Second year wasn't much better, with 2A hitting even worse. Barely passed 2B, but it was my first time passing all my courses since 1A. Passed all my courses in 3A, and things are looking better. It's 3 months into corona season and I can honestly say these have been the best 3 months of my degree. Self-improvement is easier now more than ever before. I really don't know how many of us go through such a tough adjustment at Waterloo, but it's not just you. Best video yet. See you around neighbour! SJ4

Bro you might not even read this but thank you for this. Imposter syndrome was already hitting me before my first CS year even started lmao but man your right. I hope I can someday thank you in person. All the best bro, keep this up

Thanks for sharing this video. I'm a CS student at another co-op school that isn't prestigious and I've started my LC grind this summer. Sometimes I feel like giving up and lowering my expectations but I know that I can do it. I look forward to both of our futures! Keep it up with the videos!
