Scott Joplin - The Entertainer: A Ragtime Two Step (1902)

American ragtime composer Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”, written and published in 1902, is among the composer’s most popular and well-loved rags. The piece is in ABACD form, with the final phrase of strain B serving as the introduction that transitions from strain C to strain D. The piece, unlike many of Joplin’s other rags, is concentrically tonal in that it begins in C Major and ends in C Major as well. Only strain C, serving as the trio section, is in a different key (in this case, the subdominant key of F Major). “The Entertainer” endures as a work firmly rooted in popular culture since the ragtime revival in the 1970s, having appeared in movies like “The Sting” (1973) in addition to being used to herald the arrival of ice cream trucks to American children.

The Joplin piece everyone knows, at least up to 2:25 😅

Still, I'm glad The Sting brought renewed attention to his work.

Am I the only one that thinks the Entertainer is a little sad?
