Billy Strayhorn's approach to block chord voicing was truly one-of-a-kind, and it still sounds as radical today as it did 80 years ago. In this video, I go over some of the theory behind his unique arrangements and a few classic examples of his work. Hope you enjoy!

Terrific!
I’ve been transcribing lots of Strayhorn recently, knowledge of Strayhorn is CRIMINALLY lacking in the big band education scene!

Thanks for your fine analysis. I have just begun to fullly appreciate Billy Strayhorn, both as a musician and a person, having recently read his biography.

Fascinating and well done. I did 2015 Billy Strayhorn Centennial presentations in Pittsburgh focused on his revolutionary biographical and compositional presence in the Ellington world and beyond.

Great video!!! Just curious, is there a reason you filmed and edited the video in vertical?
