Frugal TV entertainment

As of this year in 2023 the average consumer is spending over £600 per year on subscriptions and at least £200 of this is on streaming services.

On the outside streaming services seem like a great idea, you have this whole catalogue of movies and TV shows to choose from at your fingertips, all for just £15 a month ...but how often have you experienced opening Netflix only to discover you can't find something to watch?

I don't know why streaming services have so little choice when it comes to GOOD tv and movies but what I do know is this. The money can save from not having a streaming service can then be used to go have a real experience in the real world creating memories that you can enjoy for the rest of your life instead of watching mediocre tv.

All I'm saying is be more smart with where you spend your money for your television entertainment.

First of all asses how much tv you're actually watching. If you're like me and you actually value your free time then you probably also only watch somewhere around 10 - 15 hours per week.
In this case I have a far better option. Good old fashioned DVD's!! Did you know that DVD's actually have better picture and sound quality than streaming services? There's also something satisfying about having a physical copy of a movie or TV show that you know you will be able to keep forever and never have to worry about losing it because the streaming service deletes it ...but that's not even the best bit! Believe me, I've done the math and the calculations are correct. Let's say you want to watch Breaking Bad on a streaming service - Breaking Bad is arguably the best TV series ever made - now if like me you only watch 10 - 15 hours a week because you actually have a life then you'll need to sign up for at least 2 months of streaming to watch the entire Breaking Bad series. That's roughly £30 ...but did you know you could easily find the entire boxset in a charity or thrift shop for less than a fiver, AND you'll get to keep it and enjoy it all again and again if you wanted to.

Still not convinced?

With a DVD not only do you get the original series or movie but you also get behind the scenes footage, additional extras and the directors cut, and nobody can ever tak eit from you no matter how much it gets canceled! Personally I have a whole DVD library of all my favourite movies. Movies that I never see shown on streaming services. Most of the DVD movies I've bought cost 20p each or less from charity shops so as you can imagine given the normal amount of time I watch TV this works out way less than paying for a streaming service!

This is exactly what I do. No streaming and no TV licence. Just DVDs.

I only bave a Netflix subscription TV wise. But i have a bunch of online app subscriptions that comes to around 80 quid a month. I definitely have to scrap some of them as it adds up. You buy one thinking 'oh its only 10 euro a month thats nothing' but thats how they get ya...
