Do you have a heat pump? If so, what pleasantly surprised you in the first few days and weeks of ownership?

Comfort of whole house 24/7 definitely pleasant, but for me those sunny days when my solar covers the ASHP heating house/water for free (most of year) always makes me smile. Free heating!

Brilliant loving the vids. We love our heat pump and like you we have solar and home battery storage, 2 evs etc and our bill for last month just shy of £100 (I think our would be similar to your bills on same tariff but we switched to tomatoe energy lifestyle ev tarrif a couple of months ago), we don't have gas anymore but still paying monthly for our solar and heat pump installation another couple years to go but the saving in fuel cost for cars and our monthly utility bills has halved so helps offset cost of the upfront investment for a more comfortable home and zero fumes. Recently we had to renew our mortgage deal and they took into account the solar installation and heat pump and insulation added to the house as part of the valuation of the property, which was a bonus enabling us to have a better loan to value, so a lower % rate reducing our monthly mortgage repayments too. Agree with those things and controllability of the heat pump if you wish to fine tune comfort / cost etc. I've suddenly become a fan of home assistant 😂❤❤

This is what we need to hear. Actual installed experience.

Although to be fair if you used your boiler in an on off manner then you are going to notice a difference. Assuming you had a condensing boiler then having it running with an open therm then it should have been more efficient than on and off.

Looking forward to your deep dive breakdown.

Yes again a short interesting and punchy video. Like you we have via our FIT payments paid off the cost of the initial solar install, the subsequent additional installs and a Tesla Powerwall. It’s only the fact we have a 3 year old combi with a 10 year warranty that’s stopping us going ASHP to get rid of gas completely.

We last week had a EPC done on the house for the first time, that was interesting as we learnt a lot. That has given us more accurate information regarding insulation that will enable the ASHP when fitted to work more efficiently, of course the combi will need less gas to keep the house warm too.
Looking forward to next weeks first monthly cost video.

We have a gas boiler that keeps the house at 21-22C during the day and 18C in the night. The cylinder never runs out of hot water. We pay annually about £800 for 12, 500kwh of gas and I still remember the annual bill at £430 only a few years ago.
When the 7 year old boiler gives up on us in the future, I will definitely consider a heat pump.
Hopefully by then the overheated prices for installation will cool down.

Just like you our house is now warm 24/7, no cold morning. Only been fitted 3 weeks. Gas removed so no gas standing charges and so far my running costs are much lower.i also have solar panels and battery storage so its the best thing I have done for my son’s future

My dakin is being installed in just a weeks time! My property came with a rent a roof solar scheme so it'll be nice to utilise more of the energy generated.

Its been a long road to get this point I'm just glad that I'll be ditching gas!

Nice. Time for an Induction hob then, and get away from the Standing Charge for Gas?

@JonathanTracey can you tell me if there is any difference in your shower pressure now that you have gone from the vented/pumped Aqualisa to the mixer? We are still in the quotation stage of the heat pump journey and still have the vented pump for our shower, but will require a mixer when we have the heat pump installed.

Answering your question. How little heat the radiators give out and yet the house is lovely and warm. It made me realise how gas would blast the heat. My wife feels the cold and she has just asked me to turn it down from 21c to 20c. We run 3am to 9pm. My wife sometimes comes downstairs early, otherwise it would be 6am to 9pm. As you say hot water is great. We run 45c to 48c. My wife said it was too cold at first. Then she realised she doesn’t have add all that cold water to cool down the gas overheated hot water.

How is your heat pump cheaper than your gas when your cop is below 4?

Our gas bill was £9 last month. Same as you gas hob. Our electricity bill in November was the £13 more this year than last if you add gas and electricity from last year. This was a pure comparison. Without gas for the hob it would have been £5 more. I think gas is also more expensive this year.

How dare you have nice things to say about a heat pump! The daily mail and telegraph readers will be getting their pitchforks out saying you're supposed to be miserable with a noisy cold house, and skyrocketing electricity bills. 😊

We have constant comfort, constant hot water, with a modern gas boiler. Wait until you see the cost of an annual service on your ASHP.

Whats that horrible two pin plug on your intro ;). If you had a modern, demand compensated, correctly sized boiler you'd have the same comfort and probably very similar running costs (if you don't have battery/solar), still love heat-pumps.

Dude eliminate your gas hob, electric hob is better (so says missis) eliminate gas standing charge, and benzene poisoning risks from all gas hobs. You know how all gas boilers have to vent externally…
