It's called being a one hit wonder.
But it's good to remember that he is not a one hit wonder in Australia, and Somebody that i used to know was an alternative hit in the USA first. It's quite normal that some alternative artist get the crossover treatment from time to time.
At least it was (for now) a great one hit wonder (good song a huge success)
