To flip this on its head, AI players might be better idea. Maybe for once, there would be a party who actually picks up on your story hooks, do what they are supposed to and don't kill off your cool NPCs.

One idea that crossed my mind was the AI as a co-dm. It could run specified monsters (probably just the minions), help with making up names for things on the spot and keep track of time [it would need some idea of the events of the game for this]. Most importantly it could interact with the players during downtime sort of play by post.

I'd only be interested in it for the purpose of solo gaming. As a DM assistant it's great. I've already experimented, using Chat GPT to spit out random townsfolk for a little spelljammer port village and a clan of kobolds. I can see it as being invaluable as a tool to quickly provide DM's randomized data, encounters, etc on the fly with more varied results than using random tables.
So - AI DM? Nah. AI DM's Assistant, I'm all over this.

You know what could also be great. A human DM, assisted by an AI. Let's make a small example.

Ai. Make for me a small roadside encounter with bandits. I'd like them to be in the style of robin hood and his gang. The setting should be in a forest. Make the encounter difficulty appropriate for my players. There needs to be a item that gives a clue to the hide-out of the main villain. Produce all relevant stat sheets and information and set up the VTT. Distributes all appropriate information to DM and players.

Ai: Spits out decent or maybe even amazing scenario in a minute. Save hours of time. Learn to give better prompts as you work with the Ai more. Giving even better results over time.

But as the boss of openAi says himself. ChatGPT isn't quite ready for such complex tasks quite yet.

Wow, I actually hadn't thought it like that. An AI Dm wouldn't get frustrated and if they needed to look up a ruling an AI could probably do it faster. But I'm just a cranky Dm.

I think an AI DM is just another tool to use in the DM's toolbox. AI's can keep track of some of the stuff and expedite some of the things a DM may consider "boring", but just like reading from a commercial campaign setting you don't have to follow it to the letter - you can deviate from it or outright ignore it if you think it'll give you and the players a better experience. Just another way to do things faster; you just got to learn how to use it to suit your needs.

I think there is only a layer missing over chatGPT, one that keeps track of everything and give chatGPT just the info needed for the next response through API, I have been using it both as a DM and as a player, is really good at description of scenes, and generating subplots,

dude, they have Zargon app for hero quest and we can clearly see the HQ is a 'scaled down' D&D. Also, I play solo but even so, I'm the DM and I run oracles for the characters. I started doing this way back in the 80's to test run encounters for my players. You'd be surprised how much fun it is.

An AI DM would be a novel experience but really, I like not having to rely on internet to play my games.

I should preface this with the fact that I don't play modern d&d. Although I don't think an ai dm can replace a human, I do see where it might be useful as a tool for a dm. In the same way that chatgpt might be. We live in a culture of automaton. The large, negative reaction to it reminds me a little of the luddite rebellion back in the early 19th century. They weren't wrong, but they could not forestall the future.
I look at it this way. If people want to use an ai dm, more power to them. It does not take away from how I've been playing for the last 35 years and it won't change it in the future.

So the AI will only be as smart or experienced as the human programmer.
I wouldn’t want an AI DM.

For me, it is usually the players who get tired and need to call it early. I always wanna go longer!

ChatGPT opposite response:

An AI like me may be a poor choice to act as a dungeon master (DM) or game master (GM) in a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) such as Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder for several reasons:

Lack of creativity: AI's like me can provide answers and generate content based on the data they were trained with, but they lack the ability to improvise, come up with creative solutions or generate new ideas, which are essential for a good DM or GM.

Lack of emotions and social cues: DMs and GMs need to be able to read and respond to the emotions and social cues of the players to make the game more enjoyable. AI's like me do not have the ability to understand emotions and social cues, so it would be difficult for them to create a fun and engaging game experience.

Lack of understanding of the rules: While I can provide information about the rules of a game, I may not have a full understanding of how the rules interact with each other, or how to apply them in a specific situation. This can lead to errors or inconsistencies in the game, which can be frustrating for players.

Lack of Flexibility: AI's like me can simulate a game, but they lack the ability to adapt to unexpected situations or changes in the game. A good DM or GM should be able to adjust the game on the fly to keep it interesting and engaging.

Lack of personal touch: TTRPGs are interactive games that rely on the interaction between players and the DM/GM. An AI could not provide the same level of personal touch and experience that a human DM/GM can.

All of this said, AI could be a useful tool for DMs and GMs, for example, to help generate random events, NPCs or encounters, but it should not replace a human DM/GM.

I love how ChatGPT just views us human DMs like we view computer games; Rigid and inflexible, following a script and unable to completely react and respond to a player's actions. 😅😂

I think ai DM could be interested in the right hands, I mean imagine combination the idea of combination of playing the multi user dungeon BUT instead of using the hard rails of programing the ai DM could whip out any NPC with rich story that perfectly fits with the players backstories while also being flexible enough to change thins as needed when new players pop in or don't show up.
I mean, how often have you read or heard (or experienced) an gaming night that was ruined due to one or two players getting late, have an surprise emergency or even forgetting it was the gaming night. But with this tech you could have a WoW style group forming whenever needed for any setting with any rulebook.

Where's that Rick and Morty clip of the Text Adventure game they tried out?

AI DM: You are in the forest.

Player: I go North.

AI DM: You are in the forest. Night approaches.

Player: I go North.

AI DM: You are in the Forest. Your Mother's time draws to a close.

Player: Shit! I go East.

AI DM: You enter a clearing. The vampires are already upon you. Game over.

solo game play with ai dm would be AWESOME! play at your own time, for the amount of time good for you, 10 hrs, 10 minutes. what ever works. I also like some of the comments on human dm assisted by ai. to expand on the open ai experience, set it in a perpetual open world, where one player (a dwarf) may go in and attack an goblin clan/tribe and getting killed, but the goblin clan moving forward would look negatively on dwarfs.. or flip it a goblin clan was attacked by orcs, then encountered a dwarf that healed them up, moving forward those goblin befriend dwarfs? after all it's ai and can track that level of details over time.

The beautiful thing about an AI DM is that it can't say no to character build options, and it's always available.

Why have one session a week when you could play half an hour to however long you want every day

AI art…AI DM.
Makes my job easier and my players sessions more enjoyable!
(My brain is a fossil - almost - barely able to soak and retain information) 😊

So, this is for me!
