The Christian Philosopher Episode 31: St. Thomas Aquinas' Argument for the Existence of God: Simplified And Explained (Part 1)
The First Cause Argument: The first cause argument is a very old argument in the history of philosophy that goes back to the ancient Greeks.
It starts with the recognition that there are effects, or caused things, in the world and argues that it cannot be the case that everything is like that. There must be something, a first cause, that is uncaused, and that something has the characteristics of God.
The argument proceeds in two steps. In step 1, we show that a first cause must exist. In step 2, we show why that cause must be one, immaterial, and personal and therefore we are warranted in calling that first cause God.
