Coby is 12M/Yr - that's an amazing contract. His next contract will be the one they need to watch out for.

Bulls know that there's not really another team that can offer Josh big money this offseason so they'll likely stick to a number.

Better than your colleague's suggestion of offering him a 1 year "prove it" contract though lol

The problem with this approach is that someone else might value him higher than they otherwise could have paid him if they went straight to him with an offer. He is WAY above the level of other top guards from his draft class, but them offering him $32M/season now would probably get them a good deal for the next 5 years.

If they wait to See what the market does, they risk someone offering him $40-45M, then they have to either pay up or lose a great core piece to build their roster with (including White & Buzelis). It all comes down to if they want to take that gamble, or another Patrick Williams gamble.

Or some kind of deal that pays better overall, with a lower y1 base salary plus a stack of different performance bonuses, but has an early exit clause at the end of year 1 if he under-performs.

Restricted free agency is for you to be able to hold onto a guy other teams are looking to poach from you. It's not a negotiation tool where you invite other teams to make offers to judge a guy's value. This guy is a complete idiot.
