i've now sat through every animated incarnation of flash gordon and i'd like to say i regret it but i don't
i had a really good time
flash gordon 1996 is the mid 90s personified
flash is now a skateboarder that wears a crop top and cargo cut offs
he has the 90s curtains boy band haircut
and he keeps saying "back in a flash"
it is... such an experience
he's also voiced by og sailor moon dub tuxedo mask lmao
this show clearly used the same voice acting studio b/c so many sailor moon cast members are in this
iirc they're also all in a bunch of the barbie movies so what an iconic filmography

this cartoon, despite how dumb it is, is honestly p close to being perfect
it changes ming to being the "villain that aggressively loves his family" archetype which i love. every time he talks to aura he's like "darling, you've been terrible today and i'm incredibly proud of you for it"
aura x flash is EVERYWHERE and in the most intense ways
they made barin sexy and spanish for some reason?
and prince thun is now a hot cat lady called thundar. child me agreed w/ this sentiment b/c i own the action figures of dale and thundar and i bought them at like age 3 w/ no idea what they were. not the first cartoon i got a few eps in and then went "hold on a minute, i have action figures of this", let me tell u now

unfortunately this cartoon is being downgraded for 4 highly important reasons
for what i assume are censorship reasons, every single harem is completely removed from the story. they made all the aliens monogamous and i cannot stan that
barin and flash did not get to have their intense bromance. in fact, barin was just not in the cartoon enough full stop
barin x aura didn't happen, which is incredibly wild b/c barin x aura is the canon endgame ship for them. they get married and have kids. they're supposed to be betrothed during the main chunk of the story, which would've been a fun plot point for this show honestly but they never implemented it and i'm disappointed. make that love triangle a love square you COWARDS
and, perhaps the most egregious thing of all... vultan was boring. his son, talon, is the fourth member of the main gang and he is also oddly dull and lacking in character and like... i sorta get it? most of vultan's character traits aren't super child friendly but surely you can still portray him as being a bit of a party animal or something. a bit of a menace. especially because hawkcity hosts the mongo olympics at one point and yet vultan wasn't even present. surely they could've given him a bit of a roman emperor at the colosseum moment

anyway this is for YES's pride mep and flash is here to have his bi moment
flash gordon is a character that 100% should just be bi
i am desperate for him to just be made bi
i also think he'd be prime for a modern cartoon for an older audience in the realms of invincible etc but i doubt that's happening since the only thing going on atm is a film remake that's been in production hell since about 2016. it was originally supposed to be an animated film by fox but now disney's making it live action so get ready for an incredibly grey film, everyone
you know disney won't let him be bi either
