This is another excellent question. So many students find these two sentences confusing. There is absolutely NO difference in meaning between these two sentences - there is only a difference in tense. I have got = present perfect (have you? so have I), whereas I have = present simple (do you? so do I) and so they use different auxiliary verbs. However, I repeat that there is no difference in meaning. So use whichever you like.

I am British so I can't speak for the Americans. But I see very little difference between Have you got brothers or sisters, and do you have brothers or sisters. But there may be grammar books around which suggest that they are different.

I use the present perfect (I haven't bought) because in my example I imagine that I haven't bought my friend a present (and I don't imagine WHEN), but when I want to emphasize the fact that I did buy it, I use the PAST SIMPLE, because I am thinking of that concrete and definite past moment when I actually bought the gift. Have I made this clear? If not, I will try later. I have a lesson now. It is still possible to say 'I HAVE bought you a present. Keep asking good questions!

Sir, in your example @7:19 you say, "If your friend thinks you HAVEN'T bought a present..." you reply with "I DID buy a present." So my question is, can we really use a Simple Present instead of Present Perfect (I HAVE bought a present)?
