The comparisons of VW and Škoda are so 2012. Since that approximate time, Škoda was simply ahead and we just witnessed the gradual realization of this fact, many folks needed many years. Comparisons with Mercedes, Audi, BMW are more relevant and I still often feel that they are ahead of Škoda in many respects but I realize it can be irrational, I have been brought up to worship the luxurious German brands, communism around me notwithstanding.

I saw it in person - interior definitely feels cheaper than Superb 3. Yes, it looks nice from color and design perspective, but materials are awful

I think this is more about the choice of materials than the built quality. The materials used in the manufacture do not determine the quality. Just on my opinion.
