The Mossel Bay War Memorial is located next to the Point Hotel. The idea for the memorial came from the Moth Shellhole Veteran Organisation to commemorate all those from Mossel Bay who sacrificed their lives in defence of their country in WW1, WW2, the Korean War and all the soldiers who guarded our borders. The names of these soldiers were inscribed on a map of Africa, on which a line of crimson mosaic marks the places of birth and death of those commemorated by the monument.
It was designed by W. J. Delbridge, an old boy from Mossel Bay who kindly donated his services. All funds for the monument were raised by the Mossel Bay community through public subscriptions and various events.
The monument was erected on “Frog Rockâ€, so named because of the shape of the rock. At that time it was a popular playground for the boys in Mossel Bay. The unveiling took place on Sunday 28 September 1924 by Major General Sir H.T. Lukin and was dedicated and consecrated by the Bishop of George. in 1954, the names of the victims of the 1939 to 1945 conflict were placed on a marble plaque.
