The acknowledgement is only an optional part of a dissertation or thesis. In this section, you thank and recognize those who supported you in various ways, emotionally, financially and academically during your doctoral research. If you decide to include the acknowledgement, that should not exceed one page and within the 'word limit' specified by the university guidelines.

In the professional acknowledgement, you may include, supervisors, professors, and others involved in the research. In the personal acknowledgement, you may include other persons including family who give support during the doctoral research.

In the dissertation, the acknowledgement is presented after the abstract and dedication, but before the titles page. Since it comes at the beginning of a dissertation or thesis, it has an impact on a reader.

You cannot afford a single mistake in this crucial stage after long years of research. Always refer to the university guidelines. Do not hesitate to contact your program director/reviewer if you have any questions. Until you finish the acknowledgement as it is required, you are not done.
