What The Hell Happened to Skate?

Skateboarding video games. Quick, what just came to mind? If it was anything other than Tony Hawk Pro Skater, congrats! You are in a very small group. Odds are, if you are anywhere in your 20s or 30s, you likely played some sort of skateboarding video game either in the 90’s, or the early 2000’s. Or perhaps, even after that.

While the genre is certainly past it’s hayday, it’s also fair to say it never really totally died. While the Tony Hawk games largely ruled the 90’s and early 2000’s with an iron grip over the skateboarding genre, it did give way to another franchise during the era of Playstation 3’s, Xbox 360’s and Nintendo wii’s which was the creatively named Skate. While it did have some noticeable differences with its predecessor, Skate largely followed in Tony Hawk’s footsteps with a similar style and tone, but much better graphics on the newer hardware and a unique control scheme.

Fresh off of Need For Speed Wanted and Carbon EA’s trusty developers in Black Box were a perfect fit for a nice flashy skateboarding game, and all things considered did a pretty good job with the game and making a trilogy out of it. Even the third game, when most people find is the time when most franchises start to feel stale, Skate was still pretty good. So what happened? Why is that, if I want to play a game in this franchise, I need to pull out a console that is over ten years old? What the hell happened to skate?

Would have loved an HD Remaster of Skate 1, 2 and 3. Kinda like what Naughty Dog did with the Nathan Drake trilogy.

I remember getting SKATE for Christmas for my PS3 and my cousin and I played the shit out of it Christmas Eve together. I even had the blue and yellow GONZ Adidas Superstar skate shoes. Such a great title. With that said I am hopeful for a new SKATE title one day.

Loved the SKATE franchise. I cannot understand or believe that it ended how it did. I still play Thrasher Skate and Destroy since it is my all time fav skating game but I always considered SKATE a modern take on Thrasher.

THPS on a downward slope after the second game? Lol okay 3 and 4 were the best ones, 2 still didn't have a revert, let alone spine transfer, but what do I know?

You dont have to buy a 10 year old console to play Skate. Skate 3 got ported to XBox 1 with an enhanced edition because the game had a huge resurgence a few years ago after Pewdiepie did a miniseries on it which spawned a bunch of other lets play stuff.

I'd like skate 4(if it ever comes out) to have a pro difficulty mode where you have ONE life and you have to skate your best, if you break bones too many times or take a nasty bail and break your neck it's over. But while recovering from minor injuries you can play an arcade skating game on your "virtual couch" and earn buffs like speedy recovery, one get out of bail free card(won't die just be injured). Also need to earn money from comps to pay hospital bills. The goal would be to become pro and get your own game but if you die or get crippled it's back to the beginning

Thps2 was absolutely not the peak. The series was great up until THAW. I don't understand why people prefer a 2 minute time limit and less tricks.

Got every playstation and xbox except the originals along with every skate for my 360 😎 PC is being built dont even start that
