You may not always see them, but you can certainly hear them.

"We are about to see billions of cicadas, commonly referred to as periodical cicadas because they only come out periodically, every 13 or 17 years depending on what broods you're talking about," said Austin Jones, a University of Arkansas entomologist.

Seventeen states from northwest Louisiana up through Illinois and portions of the Southeast will experience what some are calling "Cicada-geddon."

Entomologists expect the harmless – but noisy – insects to emerge from the ground to feed and mate during May and June.

I’m mesmerized by this phenomenon. I didn’t know about cicadas and their 13 years hiding. Now here in Missouri it’s a 24 hours symphony…it’s so loud, yet it doesn’t bother me.

I grew up from youngest memories to the summer sounds of the cicadas, i have a fond memory of them, as said, this is a once in 17 year event, the living creatures are only announcing their presence to the world, and then like the mayflies, be gone soon enough. The sound to me is like a theme song of summer, part of what used to be.

I had just started my new life in Cincinnati in spring of 1987 when the local 17-year population began to emerge.
Lots of fun. Cincinnati people made the best of it. I never tried Cicada Pizza, but I would NOT be surprised if someone actually.cooked some.
(Of course, the pizza restaurants that advertised it probably couldn't slip that past the Health Department....)
Over Decades, the thing that surprises me is that, no matter how LOUD the cicadas might be with hundreds of thousands in just a couple of trees, you can still carry on a conversation with a friend at normal volume, and hear each other clearly... Completely different Frequency Ranges.

I am 24 now and was 7 the last time I witnessed the cicadas in Chicago. I remember thinking that cicadas were normal and were just another bug but realized later on they only come around every 17 years. I remember them being loud in the forest preserves and flying into our car. I remember playing outside and just seeing them chilling around lol. Can’t believe i finally get to see these little guys again. Pretty nostalgic tbh.

We have them in TN already. They arent as loud as the brood 7 years ago. They arent as large either. Only about 1 inch. The numbers could grow to make them louder tho. So far its been a week or two and it just sounds like summer 🤷‍♀️ we have broods that come out every year.
