This is a very good process for writing, especially the part about the writers' group. I also believe that writing short stories is an excellent way to learn to write novels (or at least learn to start to). I would say more detail is needed to really teach anyone how to actually write one.

How is this advice any different from just writing a story, I know their is a bit of difference when approaching a short story to a novel, I didn't get that here.
