Honeysuckle: A Firemaker's Friend

Показать описание
My Boy Scout troop will be going to summer camp in a few weeks and there will likely be 3-5 scouts who choose become candidates for the rank of Firecrafter. Among other requirements, Firecrafters must learn to make and use a fire-by-friction kit – typically a bow drill set.
Too often I’ve seen scouts drag dead trees or big logs back to camp, from which they hack out overly thick fireboards and big fat spindles. I’m trying to encourage them to “go small” and it’s just not necessary to go through all the effort to find “ideal” materials. Pretty much any standing dead, un-pigmented wood will do, and that’s where honeysuckle comes in. It’s easy to identify and wildly abundant - there are often vast thickets of the stuff at most BSA camps and parks.
Living honeysuckle makes excellent fire bows and nobody complains when you cut it. Standing dead honeysuckle can be used for tinder, kindling and fuel. And it’s excellent material for making bow drill spindles and fireboards. Honeysuckle is a one stop shopping source for a variety of firemaking materials. In fact, about a year ago my family went “cabin camping” and all we used for our campfires that weekend was dead honeysuckle growing beside and behind our cabin.
Mostly honeysuckle is a pain, but it’s becoming this firemaker’s friend. You might have some good luck with it too. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to give it a try.
