Borley Rectory was constructed in 1863 and quickly gained a reputation for being haunted. Locals claimed to see ghosts wandering around the church, hear mysterious sounds, and even witness apparitions.

Reports of the spirits began in the early 1920s, starting with observations by Reverend Harry Bull. Bull, who served as a clergyman at Borley Rectory, claimed to experience strange occurrences. These included sightings of ghosts, unheard bell tolls, and strange noises coming from the bedrooms.

In 1929, Lionel Foyster, one of the new rectors of Borley Rectory, and his wife Marianne began to observe supernatural activities in the house. They encountered mysterious writings and images, attacks on Marianne, and even a mysterious hand playing with the children's toys.

These events caught the attention of British researcher Harry Price in the 1930s. Price conducted a series of investigations at Borley Rectory, attempting to document the strange occurrences. During his research, he conducted experiments to prove the existence of ghosts and enlisted the help of mediums.

However, in 1939, Borley Rectory was destroyed by fire. Even after the fire, the Borley Rectory haunting continued to be shrouded in mystery and controversy. Some argued that the events were largely fabricated, with Harry Price exaggerating the story. Others believed that Borley Rectory was truly haunted and that further investigation was warranted.

Today, Borley Rectory is known as one of England's most famous ghost stories, continuing to captivate paranormal enthusiasts and researchers alike.
