I think the reason why apologists use this argument is to appeal to people's emotions and make the opposing side look unappealing. A good example of this is when apologists falsely state that Atheism equates to believing in nothing.

If everything is magic then there is no need for complexity.

I really like this argument, as it can easily apply both ways.  Why is fairy dust more "special" than atoms?  What is it about this ectoplasmic "soul" stuff that gives rise to consciousness but cannot be replicated by atoms?  Under the theistic view, you're not special, either.  You're just a collection of soul-stuff acting in a fancy, incomprehensible way.  I can deflate that view just as easily by talking about it in equally derogatory terms.

I wish apologetics would be made illegal already, that shit's just an overglorified lie.

I especially LOVE your point @2:14 forward:  "The fact that these interactions, filtered through natural selection, can produce thinking, feeling, conscious beings is vastly more impressive & romantic to me than any fairy-tale conception of human origins."

Yeah I've always felt like this, it's just sad that apologists can't accept it.

Ah yes, the wonder of Nature, with no need for magic pixies or their dust.

That last sentence is incredibly quotable. Nicely put.

I'm so glad you addressed this issue. I also remember Shelly Kagan's response to WLC. Apologists also believe that without some kind of external supernatural element, this somehow disavows us of "free will" and that our actions are solely determined by the laws of nature and we therefore cannot make our own choices. As if this is somehow incompatible. Argument from ignorance. Just because we don't exactly know how consciousness emerges from brains.

The diamond analogy works beautifully. I'll be sure to remember that!

1:45 _"... all-loving wizard in the sky sprinkling us with his fairy dust..."_
sound really dirty.

Reminds me of that Sagan quote "The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together."

I was just having this conversation -- I was comparing the human body to a termite colony, where in each case the individuals (cells in humans, termites in a colony) have no idea what they are doing or why they are doing it, yet the whole group can produce something no individual even knows about, mainly because they don't 'know' anything. Just chemicals and electricity doing what they do. Most of the cells in a human being aren't even human cells.

What is it about emergence that terrifies people so much?

Once again a splendid, spot-on (and amazingly concise) video.  Keep up the good work!
