Russia & China hit back at EU sanctions as tensions over 'genocide' ramp up

Показать описание
China and Russia have hit back at Western countries for sanctions imposed on Chinese officials over human rights abuses in Xinjiang. The US, UK and the EU imposed the sanctions on Monday due to accusations of ethnic cleansing and genocide against Uighur muslims in China.
Western countries have long targeted Russian officials close to Vladimir Putin over issues such as the invasion of Crimea, nerve agent attacks in Sailsbury and alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US Presidential election.
However this is the first time the EU has placed sanctions on China for human rights abuses since the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
Beijing claims the camps in Xinjiang are simply for reeducation and reducing extremism, though survivors of the prisons claim they are far more sinister. Reports of torture, forced sterolisation and slave labour have emerged in recent years. China responded with its own sanctions against Brussels on Monday and said the time for countries interfering in its internal affairs is over.
Some MEPs have said they could block an EU/China trade agreement signed last year as tensions between the two powers heat up.
