Just how different were the earliest Biblical manuscripts? Have the gospels been divinely preserved? Or were they subject to human error and malicious intent?

And all those manuscripts doesn't include all the changes the story had before it was written down the first time. To make a parallel to what we currently have (I am sorry if the time is slightly off). Imagine the earliest text we have access to regarding the American declaration of independence was written five years. And that was written decades after the declaration by people who best case were talking to people who had talked with eye witnesses. And now we assume that this single book is 100% true.

To round out the parallel: There are writers in Europe from about 100 years after the declaration who tell about "Americans" and what their beliefs are.

I relate more broadly to “Divinely inspired” than you might and haven’t had any need for anything to be “Divinely preserved”, but this still fills out details for me on something I’ve been perplexed by. Great presentation.

My fundamentalist brother challenged me to find a single problem with the text, and I'm like, "You're the one who thinks it's the perfect book of all time, shouldn't you be the one doing your own research. He won't though. 30k variants is daunting though, can we just get a short list of maybe 5-10 strong examples that prove there is no authoritative text? The problems of conservation of biblical texts start with the fact that there are so many authors. Even in today's world authors make changes when a new edition is published. And that is done by themselves.
We don't know the authors of most of the biblical texts. And alterations are made by other people than the original creators of the material that was used to create the text.

Well, it could very easily be called “The Theologian’s Cannon” and by recognition of how it’s used, be a “Choose Your Own Ending” book. Requiring something to be divinely inspired does not mean it must be divinely preserved, that's begging the question. The question, " Why didn't God preserve the autographs of his word, " is a good question. But the argument presented in the short is poor.

Frank turek speaks about this in his lecture and in some of his debates. The way the Bible was written and passed along was likely the best way to preserve it and keep it's authenticity. Almost seemed like God knew what he was doing.
