To clarify, what I said about compression on a real bass. I like a faster attack to grab the transient and make the front of the signal more uniform (less pokey). I also like a relatively slower release (just slow enough so that I can get a relatively even sound throughout the bass). A release that’s too fast may become too loud and then in comparison it actually feels like it’s getting too quiet as the signal tapers off after the release lets go. Whereas if you slow the release down, it lets go more slowly which allows the signal to sound more uniform and consistent throughout. This is generally my preference. Hope that helps!

When i heard you explain the EQ before reverb my jaw dropped. Of course!! Ive been doing it wrong since the beggining. I cant wait switch the order and see how it sounds.

Evan, another great video. It looks like your channel is going to town. You have really good subject matter with the right amount of video length. I do not mind more but the average person maybe can hang on around 15 minutes. By all means do not stop what you are doing. I love it!!!!

personally for me, as a rookie who's just making my mix work, i use multiband compressor as de-esser then i add AIR and transient sounds that doesnt have to be a synth/melody

Hi, thanks I was one of the askers. I agree and know there's no right or wrong (I have a new concept I call the telephone bus) but what you explained in the previous video wasn't all that clear but nonetheless interesting. I wanted to understand better what you were on about with that.

What you went into at the end is why they say arrangement is the first step to a good mix i guess, these different low range pianos with various reverbs sound like a nightmare indeed.

I think it’s important to mention that in linear processing, the order of plug-ins doesn’t matter. So if you’re using a linear reverb, it doesn’t matter where you place it in the chain. It’s when you have a nonlinear process like compression or saturation that the order becomes an issue because these processes alter the signal’s dynamics and harmonics differently depending on the signal they receive.

I like taking a bass channel and duplicate it and high pass one and low pass the other then make another that is overdriven then process the channels to a bus. This is just some of the ways I deal with the bass. It depends what I have in front of me and what I fell like at the time. I like the way Evan explains and does things. Keep it coming!!!

I like parallel processing, a lot. It allows me to create... +single+ knob turns that cause a whole +MASSIVE+ shift of magic/eq/compression/color all at once. Big, stupid, and fast... At least one parralel on each buss.

(This is from a producer standpoint, more than mixer stance, ofc.)

Awesome job. Thanks for answering our questions. Just started the video qnd the info on reverb is already gold! If it helps for future content, reverb is tricky as a beginner - where to pan, whether to use mono, whether to pan delays or reverb to the opposite channel of guitars, what to EQ and how to blend without causing a cloudy mix.

More gold on the bass compression too! I've been scared to use a fast attack even when my gut told me it was needed because I was scared of blunting transient too much. But it's like you say - sometimes you need to have confidence in your ears and forget about whether you're following a rule.

The only issue I have when using plugins+outboard AND parallel processing with watching out for phasing issues

Good stuff! 😎 Doing parallel EQ? Probably not, but you can EQ parallel saturation if you're hearing a reason (EQ first on the Aux, imo)Or like a high or low cut on Parallel compression if you hear that you don't need those frequencies reinforced for whatever reason.

how are you processing your parallels tho

Bob Dylan use to say that engineers make the kick sound really good, then they make the snare sound amazing and then all the other tracks and then the song suddenly sucks 😂😂😂
