My favourite Sherlock Holmes story is The Sign of Four. I am also very fond of The Copper Beaches. You can’t go wrong with The Adventures.

Thank you so much for the shout out, Rachel! I really appreciate it!😊

Philip Fracassi is a favourite author of mine but I haven’t read A Child Alone With Strangers yet. This is something I’m always finding myself doing. So much so that I’ve been considering changing my channel name to The Backlist Reader, because I seem happy only when reading a book that’s been out for over two or three years. 😂

My favourite Sherlock Holmes is also Hounds of the Baskervilles. There’s something exceptionally fun about that one. And also like you, I really enjoy how much it feels like a horror story.

I love the hound of the Baskervilles. I'm a big sherlock Holmes fan and watch anything based on him. 😊

Hi, Rachel! Joyce Carol Oates is one of my favorite authors. She dabbles between horror/Gothic and family saga genres. My personal favorite would be We Were The Mulvaneys. But I would personally recommend Beasts, a novella-length Gothic horror with disturbing/unsettling themes.

I think it's a great idea to do a wrap-up of the older books that you really enjoyed. The longer I am on booktube, the more I am just looking for excitement for good books, and not necessarily critical reviews. I have All Hallows on hold and am looking forward to reading that. - Paul

Great reviews, you've given me a lot of books to look into. I enjoyed your opinion of Joyce Carol Oates, this particular book, and Zombie. I would not describe JCO as a horror writer first - I would say she is more suspense and unsettling drama than any other genre, but I enjoy so much of her books. She's worth checking out, her canon of work is pretty vast but worth reading in my opinion.

I definitely need to read more (that's not news, that's olds) and I'm gathering the courage (and the time, that damned elusive time) to read a novel called Bodyshocks. It's very much outside my wheelhouse, but l have to try new things this year.

Sightings by Mark Lukens is one of my faves and his work is pretty underrated and doesn’t get enough attention. Also J A Konrath and Jack Kilburn books are great, Origin by J A Konrath is also one I highly recommend

Night Gaunts is an interesting collection of dark psychological suspense stores from Joyce Carol Oates, one I enjoyed. Of particular note is the titular story, which is a fantasia on H P Lovecraft's upbringing.

Also enjoyed Black Dahlia, White Rose, another collection, this one of novellas, the titular focused on Liz Short and Marilyn Monroe having been roommates briefly.

Oates is always quirky and literary but delves into interesting darkness. Not horror, not really genre, but certainly a write genre readers can get into for the material and its unpredictable handling.

I've been recently listening to James Lovegrove books about Sherlock, it's a fun prolongation of the classics. I particularly liked mixing Sherlock with Lovecraftian mythos in the Cuthulhu Case files. I don't think I went t trough all Connan Doyle's short stories. I was also listening to a lot of audioplays of Polish radio last year including Sherlock, what stricked me is the high body count amongst his clients, as for genius detective Holmes isn't that effective in keeping people who hired him alive.

Ah, you like A Study in Scarlet. Definitely find and read the short story A Study In Emerald by Neil Gaiman, which won awards. It's not just a Holmes pastiche, it also incorporates Lovecraftian monsters and other tropes and topoi from other famous works. Just wonderful.

Your description of Such Sharp Teeth is right on the money. The only new horror I've read lately is Episode 13 which was very meh. I haven't had much luck this year except for A Deadly Education which was a solid 4 stars.

You should cover some of the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs at some point. Those books need more praise. 🐺

I read Hound of the Baskervilles probably 13 years ago so I don't remember much about it but I remember how unlikeable Sherlock Holmes was. In adaptations I have seen he is a jerk, but still loveable somehow, but not so in the book! In my opinion. I do want to read the short stories at some point. I never have before either! A Child Alone With Strangers and The Dead Lake are both on my tbr.
