I have to give credit to where it’s due and Dani Olmo on his debut for Barcelona made an immediate impact off the bench against Rayo Vallecano and prior to this game, they had issues with registering him. Down by a goal and were struggling to break down their low block in the first half as many of their attacks went through the right side, he came on at half time in that attacking midfield role and overall he changed the complex of the game for this team as he looked bright, they were more dynamic and flexible in their play and he scored the game winning goal late in the game to secure the win for them. Just from watching that game, it’s very obvious that his best position is as a number 10 behind the striker. Talk about being a difference maker.

There were many people including myself who were 50-50 on Barcelona signing Olmo in a sense that on one hand he’s a talented player and we saw glimpses of his brilliance when he helped Spain win the EUROs with some big goals that he scored in the knockout stages and he just has an elegance about his game that makes him special and when a player of his ability was on the market and he had a release clause in his contract, they couldn’t turn down the opportunity to sign him and from an attacking perspective, he’ll improve their team since he’s versatile and he has an eye for goals, on the other hand, given their financial situation, I agree that they didn’t need him as they could’ve used that money to sign a left winger or a defensive midfielder and strengthen other areas of the team, there was a feeling that his presence in the team would harm Fermin Lopez’s development and many people had doubts towards him and that’s because of his injury record in recent seasons. For me, he’s a talented player and that’s part of why I came to terms with Barcelona signing him and he was part of their academy and he’s going to help the team out in so many ways and he should do well in Hansi Flick’s system.
