‘Our work is powerful’: Rural women’s cooperatives cultivate a brighter future

The Tristão Islands are a remote area located off of Guinea’s northwest coast.

In 2013, the Conakry-based organisation PREM took steps to organise four women’s cooperatives on the Islands, enabling local women to gain economic empowerment, in part by assuming new leadership and decision-making roles in their communities.

With support from UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality, PREM has supported over 300 local women to become cooperative members and equal partners in community-based development.

In this video, Foulematou Keita and Aissta Keita – two cooperative leaders – discuss the many contributions women make to the economic life of Tristão society. They highlight the benefits of cooperative membership and describe the future they want to achieve for themselves and their communities.
