Coronation Street spoilers: Toyah Battersby star thought surrogate plot was 'Bonkers'
CORONATION STREET has experienced its fair share of ridiculous stories throughout this year, but Toyah Battersby’s was certainly met with some raised eyebrows - including from the star herself.
Toyah (played by Georgia Taylor) is currently tangled in a web of lies.
Determined to have a baby with her partner Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) but unable to herself, the pair decided to hire a surrogate.
However earlier this year Coronation Street fans saw the landlady tragically discover that her surrogate, Jacqui Ainsworth (Reanne Farley) had suffered a miscarriage.
Toyah was utterly destroyed by this information, and was ready to tell Peter the truth before her best friend Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) intervened.
Just before the miscarriage Eva had secretly had a one night stand with Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward).
Despite the relationship between them remaining over, Eva realised that the hook up caused her to fall pregnant - unbeknownst to Aidan.
After seeing the trauma that Toyah was going through, Eva nobly suggested that she could give up her baby once it had been born.
Relieved, Toyah agreed, but decided to keep the miscarriage and the agreement from Peter.
Toyah’s actress Georgia recently spoke to Inside Soap about the storyline, and how she initially reacted to it.
"I thought it was absolutely bonkers!” she revealed. “But Toyah is in quite a vulnerable place right now, because having a baby is all she's ever wanted.
"The thing with soaps is that the drama comes out of characters making decisions that aren't rational and aren't what you would expect.
"And I don't think any rational person is going to think that this could ever work - it's quite a hare-brained scheme by anyone's standards!”
Georgia went on to reveal that viewers will see Toyah dealing with Jacqui’s miscarriage in upcoming episodes.
Georgia continued: “I think what's actually really sad about it - and this will be dealt with later down the line - is that Toyah hasn't properly grieved for the baby that she's lost.
"The surrogate miscarried Toyah and Peter's biological child, and Toyah's just thrown herself into this crazy plan with Eva. I don't think she's really confronted her grief, so there's a lot of stuff that still needs to be resolved."
If Toyah is due to work through the trauma of losing her biological child, will she tell Peter the truth?
Georgia’s comments follow Connor McIntyre’s revealing Pat Phelan's upcoming exit.
He announced: “A man should always know when to leave the party and it’s Phelan’s time.
“It is tinged with sadness because I have met some incredible people - it’s been such a pleasure here.”
