With the release of the new Dart 2JZ Cast block we decided to visit Tom Roberts at TR Designs to discuss what goes into designing and creating a mold and casting of a new product. Tom Roberts has developed cylinder heads, superchargers, intake manifolds, engine blocks, and much more for many race teams and manufacturers.

Thank you for watching.

Great Interview. Tom is a friend and is amazing at all aspect of engines. We have worked together on some projects and he is the best. He understands air flow, compression, and many other variables that most people do not think of. Tom brings forward thinking to all of his projects to a higher level. He brings so much to the table due to his years of doing. i am a big fan of Tom. My son and I have had the pleasure of working and hanging out with Tom.

Super cool! As another SoCal guy that has been working in casting design and pattern production, always love to see these guys get some credit. It’s a dying art!

Man I can't thank Jay enough for the effort he puts in to have these videos made for a motor enthusiast such as me, who has not had an opportunity to be exposed to the level of this engineering environment. Thanks Jay, I really appreciate it.

I love this new venture, Jay. It’s apparent that you’re much happier here. Thanks for the content and your time. Have you considered working with any other YouTubers to try to build this channel? Seeing you do a tear down, build, and following it to the quarter mile, time attack, drift track or wherever to see it perform would be amazing. A trip to Japan to work with someone over there, tour HKS or meeting up with the built by legends guys, or helping Sammit with his struggles would be legendary. Or more locally, working with the Boostedboiz on their upcoming 2JZ build for their civic, or Cleetus with his mk4 rat rod Supra. Either way, thanks for taking the extra time to create these videos for us to learn! Hope to pick up an engine from you in 2025. Cheers.

This conversation was so boring I could barely get through it. Fortunately I worked in an engine casting foundry for International Harvester when I was in college and I got to see first hand the cores they made for the internal cavities for both blocks and cylinder heads, saw them set up on the drag then the cope is added and the sand poured around those core pieces. You wouldn't even know what you were looking at unless someone told you. very complex work IMO. I'm sure Tom here knows his stuff, he just doesn't explain it very well IMO and I probably don't either. But if any of you ever get the chance to tour an engine casting foundry take the tour!
