Chinese Takeaway-Style Orange Chicken
Servings: 1

INGREDIENTS

Marinade
150 grams chicken breast, diced
1 orange, zested
1 teaspoon crushed garlic
1 tablespoon soy sauce
A pinch of salt
A pinch of pepper

Chicken
50 grams plain flour
2 eggs, beaten
50 grams panko breadcrumbs
500 milliliters oil

Lemon sauce
50 milliliters chicken stock
1 orange, zested
2 oranges, juiced
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon cornflour

PREPARATION
1. Combine all marinade ingredients with the chicken breast and leave to marinade in the fridge for 20 minutes.
2. Coat the chicken breast first in flour, then eggs, and finally panko breadcrumbs.
3. In a medium-sized saucepan heat the oil to 170°C/325˚F.
4. Deep fry the breaded chicken for about 3-4 minutes until the coating is golden brown and the chicken is cooked through.
5. In a small frying pan, combine the chicken stock, orange zests, orange juice, and sugar, then stir. Bring the mixture to a boil.
6. Mix the cornflour with the water, then add the mixture to the pan to thicken the sauce.
7. Add the chicken to the frying pan and coat with the orange sauce.
8. Serve on top of rice and enjoy!

I think I get why you made this such a simple recipe {for the beginning cooks), but you left out so many things! Where's the rice wine vinegar, the sesame oil, and the ginger?

This recipe doesn't have any proper aromatics in it :/ No garlic fried into the sauce, no ginger, no spring onion cooked into it - orange zest and a flavourful batter can't make up for an unspectacular base sauce smothering the meat. Plus, the syrupy sauce seems way too sweet. Not convinced for once :/ Come on, Tasty, you've got wonderful chefs who know Asian/ Asian-American cuisine well and could improve on this!

do people actually know that there's no orange chicken in China unless it came from America because it was invented in America to "suite" the public's taste like fortune cookie and so many other famous "Chinese" food

Panko is for chicken tenders lol. I make a really good batter when I do Chinese or Korean chicken.

3 parts corn starch
2 parts self rising flour
salt, pepper, white sugar, any other spices.. add cold water until it's thick enough to thoroughly coat the back of a spoon. Fry chicken once at 300 for 4-5 min, then again at 375 for 3-4 min.
