The work of the three AHRC Future of Languages Research Fellows has been of fundamental importance in consulting the disciplinary community on new directions in research and on how these directions can be facilitated both by funding initiatives and by training. More than 500 researchers participated in the survey that the Fellows conducted.

In their article, ‘Research in Languages, Cultures and Societies: Voices of Researchers in the UK in 2022’, published in Modern Languages Open, Nicola McLelland and Katie Harrison provide an in-depth analysis of the work of the three Fellows. The article should be read by everyone in the subject area, and its conclusions acted upon given that they so clearly indicate the views of researchers within the discipline.

To enhance awareness of the findings of the AHRC Fellows, ILCS is organising, together with the UCML, a two-hour online discussion in which a panel of researchers will discuss the Fellows’ findings and how they can be taken forward. The seminar is the first in the new ILCS seminar series, ‘Thinking Strategically’, which is aimed to bring the subject community together to discuss issues affecting the future of research in the disciplinary field.
