Here's the key: "I see a line of cars / And they're all painted black / With flowers and my love / Both never to come back." He's seeing the funeral procession for his beloved. She has died, and in his sadness he wants all the world to wear the color of mourning.

When people see him, the bereaved man left behind, they "turn their heads / And quickly look away." "Like a newborn baby / It [death] happens every day." Like birth, death is common.

Then he addresses his dead beloved: "I could not foresee this thing / Happening to you."

"I see the girls walk by / Dressed in their summer clothes / I have to turn my head." Because they are a reminder of his beloved. And because it seems wrong to him that anyone should wear happy colors after his beloved has died. The entire world should wear black.

The line of cars painted black with flowers is a funeral. His girlfriend has died and he is depressed. Listen to the song again and everything makes sense.

This song is 57 years old! Still played on the radio every single day! Absolute classic!

The lyrics are ‘I want to see the sun blotted out from the sky’ 😂.

Bisscute the song is about the loss of a loved one and the depression it brings
"I see the girls walk by
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars
And they're all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back

One word gives this song definition. Funeral.

This was an extremely bold choice for them at the time...Not just the Eastern influence and instrumentation, but the dark subject matter. I think this song should be cited as an early venture into what would become progressive rock...

It wasn't "I wanna see the sun flying in the sky", as the graphic was written. The line is, " I wanna see the sun blotted out in the sky"

it is from 1966. It is a man whom lost a lover to death and he is depressed and sorrow filled.

It is a acoustic percussion instrument from India making the kinda whoomp whoomp throbbing sound. I can't think of the name. Brian Jones brought in the Sitar and other exotic instrument's. He was very influential in the early stones sound. He's the man!

Because the Stones were like the "Anti-Beatles" and so popular in the 1960s, they could do a non-lovesong and take their audience along with them. It was the first song I heard where the singer sounded angry and raging, in this case Jagger wants to tear the grim reaper a new one!

Great song! It's basically about the grief when someone dies

Bereavement and the pain. I’m 69 and grew up with the Stones from about 9 years old. One of the greatest bands ever to grace the soundwaves.

I first came across this as a teenager when it was used for the Vietnam era( popular with the troops) tv show tour of duty while discovering all the great music from the 60's. It does give you that anxious feeling of dread with it's lyrics & pounding drums like a bad acid trip from someone who's depressed & wants no more colours & everything to turn to black, it seems to be about a lover who's died, the hearse, flowers at the funeral & she being in heaven.
It was written while they were in Fiji & was a more slower soul song originally but while Bill Wyman was fooling around on the organ spoofing jewish weddings, Charlie Watts joined in improvising the double timed drumming heard in middle eastern dancing, the upbeat rhythm was used as a counter to the morbid lyrics. Brian Jones was on sitar 🪕 made popular by the Beatles on norwegian wood, he always looked cool on tv balancing it on his lap but didn't get the credit for his input for the song that he deserved, unfortunately later on the drugs caught up with him, lost his girlfriend to Richards & his life in a swimming pool at 27. Jack nitizsche played keyboards & has scored many movies as well as that incident with a gun on the cop's tv show.
Paint it Black was the opening track to the aftermath album in the states but not in Britain & was intended for never made film back, behind & in front beacuse Mick didn't like the director, he also came up with the line "i turn my head until my darkness goes" from James Joyce's Ulysses, it was Keith who wrote the melody. They almost give up on it while exploring a new sonic miner key number while pressed for time. Sadly they signed away the songs rights to former manager Allen Klein up until 69 with all the money going to his estate from commercials for Pepsi & Ford it's also been featured in movies full metal jacket, stir of echoes with kevin bacon & the last witch by Ciara, there's also been covers by deep purple, wasp & U2 did the b-side for "who's going to ride your wild horses "
Other early stones worth checking out include get off my cloud, the last time, 19th nervous breakdown, ruby tuesday & let's spend the night together.
Thanks Bisscute, your heart's not black, it shines like Gold 💛 🤗 🤟

Just love Brian Jones and that sitar! The Stones are timeless. I'm grateful to my Dad for flooding the car with their classics anytime the family was on the road.

This is one of those songs that need context to appreciate. I love it.. true mourning is the feeling of blackness.

What's weird is that this is a lyric video and they get the words wrong - seriously ? In this video they say "Don't wanna see the sun Flying high in the sky" but I'm pretty sure the lyrics are "I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky'. And just before that the video says " I wanna see your face Painted black" but the lyrics should be "I wanna see it painted, painted black"
