This comforting lullaby is from Vierne’s 24 Pièces en Style Libre. Performed and recorded by me this morning in St. Joseph’s Church, Glasthule, Co. Dublin on the beautiful 1896 Benson organ.

Rónán, I remember asking myself in 1988, in Bray, would you always want to play the organ. I guessed you might indeed because you actually knew a thing or two and respected the instrument. I think my opinion of your father grew to see how his love of music was a passion for you and your sister. I watched you almost every sunday dive onto the keys while your dad chatted away but at a discrete distance where he could both smoke and keep an eye to you. As soon as he saw a need that was, to his eye, just beyond your safety, he ran out to say or do what he had to say or do as a father. His pride though was unrestrained but never excessive. He was the same about Niamh. More delighted to narrate once that despite her success, she was not too grand to step up on the back of a tractor or be late for a performance somewhere in Sligo, I think. I never saw you play at St Suipice until today. What an absolute moment that had to be and Daniel Roth beside you. It is just wonderful to see you kept to a talent and it has made more of you and you of it.
