Charles Frederick Hughes (March 2, 1943 – October 24, 1971) a wide receiver in the NFL from 1967 to 1971. He is, to date, the only NFL player to die on the field during a game.

I was there at the game!!! 10 years old!!!! I’m still in shock and Morning over this!!! Being so close to Near the ambulance they took him out seeing him laying in the ambulance was totally devastated with me!!!!

He was not returning to the huddle after catching a pass. He was returning to the huddle after an incomplete pass play subsequent to his reception. Also, he did not grab at his chest. He simply collapsed, both arms on the ground, extending out from his body and bent at the elbows.

Chuck Hughes wasn't stricken after his 32-yard reception but rather after Butkus broke up a pass to TE Charlie Sanders over the middle.
