I'm starting a new veneered commission. I guess it's time to dust off the bag press and remember how to veneer...

I feel when you take a project that pushes you out of your comfort zone, it's usually harder to get started. We don't want to mess up or fail the client, but pushing beyond this mental wall allows for outstanding growth. Thank you for sharing and being transparent in your process, it's nice to see even the pros are human lol

I love when you drop a video Erik, it lifts my day. For someone who says he doesn’t do much veneering you’ve done a terrific job. Thanks for the video.👍👍

Ever since I got it, I really like using the vacuum bag. When you open the valve and the vacuum starts sucking down the bag, it's almost magic. I built a venturi vacuum pump that runs off my air compressor. I like using powdered urea plastic resin glue since it cures rock hard with no creep. Since DAP stopped making their Weldwood Plastic Resin Glue, it's harder to get, though.

A man after my own heart; I will sometimes prototype an entire version of a thing to work out kinks. I'm doing choir music stands for where my wife sings, and I left them a prototype for about a month to play with, got some great feedback, and went with some fairly radical changes for the final product, resulting in a much better - and more watchable, luckily - design. Sometimes you just need to see, touch, and hold a thing to make sure you've gotten it right. Well done, sir. <3

Urea resin hands down is the best veneer glue. Harder for us to get here in Canada but in the US it's still available. All PA glues are semi-rigid, they will never cure hard and even after drying will be susceptible to heat.

Blessing Erik, thank you for this. I'm about to start a Grandfather Clock, and with all my research, I know that solid woods are not the way to go, but veneering is. This is a side of woodworking I've never done. Thank you; you have saved me a lot of grief with glues and processes. Love your vlogs. Cheers from Westen Australia.

Custis I love the work you do, have watched several of your videos with the sound off. Maybe I'm too old, I just can't take your style of "play by play", thank God for volume control. Keep up the good work!!

Looks to me like the experiments you ran allowed you the confidence to get started. Proving - to yourself - that you can get the veneer onto flat and rounded surfaces demonstrated that you have all of the technologies and techniques you need for this project under adequate control. Wish I could say the same about my next big project...

I have a dumb question. How does glue dry in a vacuum bag? It obviously doesn't dry in the bottle, so I'd imagine that, when you remove the air it needs to dry from the container it's in, it wouldn't dry there either.

I was taught to 'relax' wavy veneer with a glycerine solution prior to pressing.
For the Gorilla glue you probably needed some moisture. Lightly spray the veneer.

Thank you for the pep talk. Needed that one today. Hubby did too.

Interesting and helpful, as always. I really appreciate you showing all the test work. Test, refine, execute - I tell my trainees this all the time (different profession for me, but same general process).

"Sometimes you just have to trudge ahead, unsure of where you're going." Man, you just described my whole entire wood working experience. Dang!

I use rubber cement on veneers and the always looked really clean. I will just say, don't use the fast drying stuff. It doesn't allow you time to press down and work with the piece before it starts bonding.

Getting one's brain back into the game, avoiding, and fear of Murphy always slow my start. "Just do it and deal with it!" "going to school on the first one!" all are important. Always enjoy your excitement for your build!
