Hi Cal. Great reporting. Was great meeting you in the park a few days ago and having a chat. I was the Aussie guy with the Filipina wife. Really enjoyed chatting with you and thanks so much for the advise. Will always watch and like your content.

I'm originally from California, and have been through many earthquakes.

The building with cracks are fine. It's just the skin of the building.
The steel skeleton of the building is designed to flex with an earthquake. If a structures frame is too ridgid it will crack like the outside wall did. That's bad.

There are other issues like the building that collapsed that was under construction. Most likely it was simply not ready for that kind of punishment. Or, older buildings that haven't been maintained or updated with better earthquake resistance.

But you're 100% correct on the "dont stand under things" part. Even if the building doesn't collapse, a chunk of the outer masonry can break off and take you out.

Best place: open area free of power lines

Second best: in a strong doorway

Everyone has to remember that Bangkok did not have an earthquake per se but rather Myanmar had the earthquake and Bangkok felt the shockwaves from it. The only seismic faults in Thailand are located in the north near Chiang Mai. Myanmar has many earthquakes but they’re usually smaller ones that are not felt in Bangkok. Modern Bangkok buildings are built to withstand earthquakes up to a certain magnitude, otherwise, many skyscrapers would have collapsed during the earthquake. The rooftop pools were ingeniously designed to counteract the swaying of the buildings to dampen the motion.

Glad to see y'all are safe, Cal. I experienced a few earthquakes when living in southern California, and that's exactly how the building are supposed to perform. Good to see the building standards are top notch.

Good info. Arriving in 2 weeks for 90 days. Not letting an earthquake get in the way of life. If it’s my time to go, it’s my time to go. ✌🏽

Hey Cal I also experienced the earthquake here, I also used to be a drywaller for many years. The ceilings are almost always suspended plasterboard with steel framing that are not structural, sometimes the walls are too but every building is different like your tap test for soundproofing if it sounds hollow then it is plasterboard and not load bearing.

All the horrible cracking and popping noises we heard is mostly the plasterboard and steel framing crunching and popping as it is all set in place and not designed to move.

However the thicker walls and especially in the stairwells is what is more concerning. My building has significant cracks in the stairwells and around the elevators which are the more stable parts of the building. Not an engineer but doesn't fill me with confidence!

Thanks Cal. It appears that the construction is pretty solid. Always a privilege. Cheers

Aloha Cal, big thank you for your earthquake update in Bangkok. Much much more real facts information then the media in the United States. In the news in the United States kept showing the building that was under constructed falling and it felt like the while Bangkok is the same. Keep up the good work and you have a loyal viewer.
