Brother thank you so much, I am a engine builder only, not a whole vehicle mechanic, so I was unfamiliar with this process. The help this was to me to get the old bearing off and the new one installed correctly in such a quick format, was huge and saved me $1, 045 from having it done and it only took about 3 hours. Thank you.

Changed mine today on my Dodge Ram 1500. Did the same thing and used a cut off wheel, and made made a small nick as you did. No big deal. I used a piece of pipe that fit perfectly on the inner race to tap the bearing on. Changed all my universals while I was at it as they looked like they needed some love.. Noise free! Thank God!

Typical response to truck crying for help. " I just turned the radio up". Good honest video. Thanks for the sharing.

Good video. I have to change mine, and there are 2 different part numbers as we have 2 different drive shaft setups for these trucks. The cut-off wheel is the way I was taught and seems quickest.

Was looking for a step by step. This is a over view.

Here's a tip and what I do. Heat the dust shield heat until red hot then with a pair of pliers and fit it on the shaft and yoke until it cools. It wont swing around the drive shaft

Great video. Perhaps cover that spline with some saran wrap or a rag. Hate to think of that spline who's surfaces see high-pressures filled with debris from the cut-off wheel, etc.

When driving items off, always put them in a vise. Otherwise your impacts are not applying all of the force to the item. Rigidity is the key to applying force. I use a floor vise for servicing u-joints and hanger bearings.

2 or 3 jaw pulled removes the exposed bearing the right way. Use a pipe to knock the new one into place. Put it over the splined shaft and against the inner race of bearing only. Good idea to chill the shaft with upside down can of air duster. Makes it go on much easyer.

Is there more to installing the bearing? Or did you use the punch to seat it all the way? Did you use a sleeve pipe to seat it?

The spline should have 1 thicker spline to locate the orientation of the 2 shafts.

Most drive shafts only go together one way, the splines have a key way design, one spline is different. Most shafts are balanced Each piece bye itself. even if you your able to mismatch the shafts, both pieces are balanced . I use a grinder to cut them off. Putting a mark/ groove on that shaft, means nothing. Does not affect operation at all. It's a huge volume of steel, your not going to hurt it. Check for freedom of movement in the bearing, and Ujoint. Grease the splines so they telescope smoothly, grease the Ujoints if you can. you can use a ziptie on the rubber dust cover.

That's because the water deflector goes on the other side

Let’s say hypothetically I used your method being that I’m liking the not needing 200 bucks worth of extra tools for a job I might do twice the whole time I own the truck. If I groove the bearing surface like that will it wear out a new bearing faster? Love your videos by the way man!

You could just put the water deflector on first--on the other side of the carrier bearing--where it goes. Would have been much more exciting video if the tires would have grabbed enough to yank the truck off the jack stands. But I guess someone else might have had to post the video afterwards. My advice: if you have a family, make sure you buy some life insurance. Jack stands have killed more shade tree mechanics than any other tool in the shop.

I’ve never understood needing to keep it aligned. Each piece is balanced.
