As someone that dives the gulf, I’m gonna need to know the original boat company that didn’t report him missing

Good learning experience . I dont think people should be critical of the diver as most people will get lost at some time while diving . . But learn from what happened
Always have a safety sausage, whistle and perhaps a mirror .
Practice using them in calm flat seas . So you know how they work .

Wife and I both carry Nautilus Lifelines. Huge psychological benefit.

My dad and my brother hired a local fisherman and the fisherman left. There was two other fishing boats stop and passed, there was a American tourist said to stop and pick him up. Needless to say dad sat in front of the dive shop for a day and scared everyone off... he became a dive instructor

So where was his dive buddy? What kind of group was he with that did not do a diver count at the end of the dive. Really!? How do people just leave others out without looking for them?

I always go through a dive center, when making dive trips. Every dive trip to the flower gardens; my dive buddy has been one of the dive shop dive instructors. I was just reminded that shark week starts in 2 weeks.

I keep a Nautilus Lifeline GPS transmitter in my dive pouch for short range (34 miles) and have a Dive Alert ear shattering horn on by BC hose. If that fails I keep a 'fanny pack' on my tank from the link below that has a watertight capsule where I keep a satellite GPS Personal Locator Beacon and one red air burst flare.  Of course that is in addition to an orange 6' DSMB and a boat deployed 100' tag line with an 18 inch red anchor buoy at the end with red and white pool floats every 15 feet.

Events like this are the reason that I actually feel safer cave diving than big ocean diving. After losing a good friend to the ocean in Cozumel earlier this year it made me reconsider a lot of things, including now carrying a PLB on offshore dives.
