Freeze Raw GREEN ONIONS (Scallions)
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. Wash the scallions; let dry on clean paper towels or a kitchen towel.
2. Parchment line a baking sheet.
3. Chop/slice the scallions in desired length (I chopped them into ¼ inch pieces).
4. Place the chopped/sliced scallions on the baking sheet in a single layer. Do NOT mound up or that mound will clump together like a little mountain...you don't want that.
5. Place this pan of scallions in the freezer. I do it overnight; however, having them stay in the freezer at least 3 or more hours will also work.
6. Take the scallions out of the freezer the next day and put into a glass jar. Return the jar to the freezer.
7. When you need scallions use your frozen ones. This works great!

Somebody mentioned Freezing Green Onions to me yesterday but they didn't say how to do it. Now I know, Thanks! I usually cut the white end off of the greens and leave the roots on then put it in a jar of water to let it grow new greens. This works a couple of times before you have to throw out the white end.

This is great! I had no idea... I often grew the bottoms of my scallions to get new ones for free. I just use toothpicks to suspend the bottom inch part way in water, and change the water ever day, and pretty soon, new scallions start to shoot up. I think you can grow them for a long time in water, but I plant them and then harvest them as needed. And now I know I can freeze them!

thank you for the tip :) how do you integrate them into a salad ? do you take them out of the freezer in advance for them to thaw ?

Great tip! So can you use these in salads after they thaw, or would you only cook with them?

Love this. It’s great. I freeze my cilantro, onions, & bell peppers. I place it all in a blender, chop or finely chopped. Place in ice cube trays, place in freezer overnight or until frozen and then place in freezer bags. Then place all in freezer and use for cooking by placing a cube or two in meals or sauté with veggies, tofu, or your no meat meals. Enjoy! 😊😳😀💕❤️

I freeze some also...also you can cut the root off leaving about 2 inches, put them in water for a few days and plant them in soil...they will grow back and you have more green onions.

Great tips! I freeze my scallions and also I cut the ends and plant them or just let the roots sit in water. They regrow so fast!

I didn’t know about this per se, but my mom used to tell me that you can freeze anything except lettuce. I’ve never tried freezing lettuce, but what I have frozen, seems to work well. 😄🥬 Always nice to see you! 😎❤️

Great advice. You are awesome as always😊 I also freeze my fresh ginger roots after I dice it, celery after chopping, and extra vegetables left over for my daily morning smoothies as a Raw Vegan so they will not go bad such as zucchini, beets, carrots, cucumbers, collard greens, and kale.

Hi Ms Berta!! I'm so glad you made this video! I've frozen peppers, celery, & yellow or white onions but for some reason have not frozen scallions but I sure will now! The way food prices have gone up, it's a good idea to find ways not to waste food, if at all possible! Thanks for another video, Ms Berta! 😊

I love doing this. Usually skip the laying out process & go directly to the freezing container. Works too. Awesome video

Perfect timing Berta! I had taken store bought scallions and rooted them in water then planted in my garden. I saw your video this morning and later when I went out to the garden decided it was time to cut back the scallions - they've been growing beautifully all summer. I dehydrated the bunches I bought from the store (saving the bulb end to pot up) but am going to freeze the bunch I cut today....thanks for this info.
