No, trail braking isn’t needed for every turn BUT it is an extremely useful tool to learn, practice and master. It’ll give you confidence for any turn, uphill or downhill, on the street or track, known or unknown roads, blind or open corners. It puts weight on the front which collapses the front suspension, reducing the rake and trail making the bike easier to lean upon corner entry, smashes the front tire into the ground for more grip, gives you the ability to manage your speed and line more precisely and eliminates reaction time incase you come up on an obstacle mid-turn. Once you know trail braking, you’ll feel like you have a cornering superpower.

Trail braking is mainly done with the front brake because it’s the most powerful. The rear brake has its place too but the priority is to master the front first then experiment with the rear.

Just finished 1400 miles of twisties in NC all usual suspects and more! Have you to thank! You have transformed my riding!

Rode way too long and got home safe again in the dark with fog and rain. Thanks again Greg! Trail braking in the wet is quite an interesting business! Not too sure about that but situation dictates pace so simple lines and easy on the gas. Spreading the good word for you in the UK.

I started riding last season and started implementing trail breaking this season (I tried it last year but wasn't comfortable enough with leaning that much yet).
It's a great technique, my cornerig in the twisties is getting better by the day, I feel more comfortable going in and much faster going out of the corner.

Good advice, we need to have all the tools at our disposal. Knowing what to use and when comes from practice

What are your thoughts on shorty levers? I feel like it’s easier to get more “precise” braking feel with OEM levers but shorty levers feel nice with two fingers on the lever. It’s mostly a mental thing I imagine

Hi there! Unrelated to trail braking, when doing an emergency brake, do we also downshift? On my 125cc (i am 16, i can't get a bigger bike) When i put first gear, it REALLY slows you down, should i just stick to brakes? Or try to downshift too. Thank you!

Exactly, good advice. You need to have lots of tools in your tool box so you can pick the tools you need to do the job. Never hurts to have plenty of tools for all situations.

How do you trail the front brake and throttle at the same time? I feel that getting on the throttle too late in a turn can unload the front tire.

I needed this one! Thanks for breaking it down so it’s easy to understand.

Hi, Is there a way to practice trail braking on slower speeds as there is a risk if we go fast during practicing on public roads.
