With the Microsoft Edge web browser you can turn any website into an app for your Surface! And using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome you can install Progressive Web Apps or PWAs quickly and easily. This is especially handy since many apps are not available in the Microsoft Store.

In fact, many apps that you'll find in the Microsoft Store, the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store are actually PWAs. So they can be installed through your browser directly without a store at all, if you know where to look.

So here is a list of Progressive Web Apps (PWA) that we've tried on our Surfaces:

Beyond Progressive Web Apps, here are some handy regular websites that I have installed on my Surface as an app:

What a useful feature in Edge. I was totally unaware of it, and will certainly be making use of the links you provided Brett. Thanks again.

Really neat feature. I install the Kindle Cloud Reader as an app. I think I like it better than the regular app. Good video.

WhatsApp, Slack and Teams also run as PWAs with almost complete functionality as their Electron desktop versions.

Wow! I was upset to see this video at first as I was expecting to see Surface Pro X sq2 one, but I was wrong. This is an awesome feature that I did not know of. It will save a lot of time trying to use different web versions of some good applications. It will change the way most organise bookmarks.

I've been doing something like this with Google Chrome. I go to MORE TOOLS and then click on CREATE SHORTCUT. And then I like to click the box for OPEN AS WINDOW. How different is this from what you've put in your video? And, is there any way to transfer these do it your self apps to a new device? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Great video as usual. This works great and is one of the reasons the move from classic Edge to Edgeium (Edge based upon Chromium) was a stroke of genius.

I use Google Maps, Google Photos, Garmin Connect, Grubhub, Amazon, and a couple news sites as PWA's now. Awesome!

If you can do the whole thing with Edge and Chrome it should be possible for other (chromium based) browsers as well to implement this feature, right? Would be perfect for those people who don't want to use Edge or Chrome for for example privacy reasons etc.
Oh and either way: Thank you so much for showing this feature. I love it already!

This is cool. I just added the graphing tool found at desmos . com. I like being able to open while streaming class without having to open my browser, since I use the edge browser also to grade exams (pdfs), and I'm always worried that I accidentally left one open.

Have you tried the Dropbox website as an app? That might solve your Surface Pro X issue.
