A Children’s Winter

This is a lovely song written in 1971 by Dermot O'Reilly, one of the members of the well-known Newfoundland group Ryan's Fancy.
Even though there aren't direct references to Christmas in this song, it fits.

Note to guitar and ukulele players: I'm playing it in the key of C but tuned down a half step. You need the following chords to play this song: C, G, F and Dm.

LYRICS:

The winter’s snow is a child’s delight
As it brightens up the winter’s night
And coats the earth in a cheery white
As it softly drifts upon it

Smiling faces watch the ground
As the snow is falling all around
And through the glass there comes no sound
As the snowflakes melt upon it

Snowman, snow house, hey play with me
Shake the snow down from the tree
Games once played by you and me
Snow softly falling

The morning comes and the children play
Their laughter rings out through the day
They hope the snow is here to stay
That it won’t be gone tomorrow

Sliding, running down the hill
The time for thought is now, but still
As they climb up on life’s long hill
They’re sure to meet some sorrow

Snowman, snow house, hey play with me
Shake the snow down from the tree
Games once played by you and me
Snow softly falling
