A popular street foods from Istanbul, especially in the Eminönü neighborhood, balık ekmek is a freshly grilled fish fillet packed in half a loaf of white bread with plenty of onions, tomatoes, salad, and herbs.

If you’ve ever gone down to the pier near the Galata Bridge, you’ve probably seen crowds of people standing patiently in line and waiting. Around them, everything is shrouded in smoke and there is a spicy smell of fish, which can be heard throughout the area. This is the most famous Turkish street foods, but much more healthy. Imported mackerel is mostly used as grilled fish.

What ise Fish and bread?

The fish is grilled with herbs and crushed red pepper, before being placed inside bread with a nice squeeze of lemon, and the eater’s choice of lettuce, tomato, onion, and even peppers. Sellers are aplenty on both the Eminönü and Karaköy sides of the Galata Bridge, and there’s no more authentic way to enjoy Istanbul ‘seaside’ life than with a fish sandwich in hand.

Fish and bread sellers are mostly found in places such as Karaköy, Eminönü (Ottoman-decorated Eminönü boat-restaurants) and Galata Bridge, but there are also small shops selling them in districts such as Yeniköy and Beykoz.

The Istanbul Fish and bread or fish sandwich has been around since the mid-nineteenth century, when fish freshly caught from the Bosphorus were grilled and served on bread by the waterside.
